The telecom market makes intensive use of computerized devices, for the management of communications and networks. Numerous devices are involved such as router, hub, switches but also base station and all sorts of gateways for switched, IP, GSM, GPRS or 3G networks.
Usage information is used by the following services :
- Operation and Maintenance services, ensuring configuration, supervision and management of networks on a very large scale basis.
- Service Level Agreement (SLA) services that ensure the quality of service required by customer contracts.
- Billing services that ensure the production of bills according to the user activity and consumption, the type of subscription, the rating procedures, ... New forms of billing are emerging requiring real-time collection and handling of large volumes of usage data in close cooperation with the carier information system (pre-paid billing, content-based billing, ...).
- Customer Relationship Management. Providers need pertiennt indicators on the usage of emerging added-value services in order to adapt then to the evolving customer demand.
